Job interviews can be nerve-wracking experiences under the best of circumstances. But when faced with a hostile interviewer, the pressure can feel even more intense. Whether the interviewer is being confrontational, overly critical, or downright aggressive, it’s important to stay calm, composed and focused on presenting your best self. Here are some strategies to help you handle a hostile interviewer with grace and confidence.

Stay Calm and Maintain Composure

The first and most crucial step in dealing with a hostile interviewer is to stay calm and maintain your composure. Remember that the interviewer’s behaviour is not a reflection of your worth or abilities—it may simply be a result of their own stress, personality, or approach to interviewing. If the hostility persists despite your efforts to steer the conversation in a more productive direction, you may consider politely ending the interview, or addressing your concerns with HR or the hiring manager afterward. Remember that your well-being and dignity are paramount and you don’t have to tolerate disrespectful behaviour.

Regardless of the interviewer’s demeanour, stay focused on selling yourself as the best candidate for the position.
